Felice Beato East Street from the Treasury, Canton April 1860

  • Not on view

From August to November 1860, Beato, a professional travel photographer, joined an Anglo-French military expedition to northern China to document the Second Opium War. The campaign marked the war’s end, as British and French armies seized Beijing and forced the Chinese empire to accept new treaties. These policies gave foreigners privileged status and eased trade restrictions between China and Europe. Beato took more than one hundred photographs capturing the colonial conflict and its aftermath in the region. Many of these pictures serve as the only photographic record of sites subsequently destroyed by British forces.
