Rock, punk, and pop music have played an important role in Graham’s interdisciplinary practice, which encompasses music videos, band documentaries, music and art criticism and theory, and Conceptual art. Homes for America—first presented as a slide show, then published in Arts Magazine—is a series of observational portraits of single-family suburban homes. Graham liked to circulate his images as photojournalism, he said, rather than art: "I love magazines because they are like pop songs . . . easily disposable, dealing with momentary pleasures." Graham played a role in the formation of Sonic Youth in 1981 and is a longtime friend of the band's.
