The Elephant World is an open-air sanctuary in Thailand’s Surin province, where the local Kui people have treated elephants as family for centuries. Initiated by the local government, the project combats deforestation and droughts, which force elephants to travel five miles daily for water. It features three key elements: the Brick Observation Tower for seed dispersal; the Cultural Courtyard for events and ceremonies; and the Elephant Museum, a network of semi-covered spaces and passages where the animals can encounter humans. Premthada’s collaboration with the community has additionally led to the development of an elephant dung brick, whose sales support the sanctuary’s operations.
