Constructed on a rehabilitated landfill, the Reggio School exemplifies ecological restoration, revitalizing an area degraded by human activity. Its architecture) encourages students to explore the interdependence of their well-being and the natural cycles of water, energy, and air. The complex has no courtyard; instead, the surrounding open ground and adjacent park serve as break spaces. By occupying only one-fifth the footprint of a typical school, the Reggio School makes more land available for outdoor exploration. Exposed mechanical systems turn the building’s operational flows into a dynamic learning environment. Reclaimed water systems support an indoor garden and greenhouse, while the school’s cork-based, spongelike facade can host small plants and insects.
