“We look at caves as archives that inform the present and future of architecture,” say Karanja and Mutegi of cave\bureau. Through archival research, digital three-dimensional mapping, and oral histories, the architects frame Kenya’s caves as an architectural) heritage that predates Western landmarks like Rome’s Pantheon. Their ongoing project The Anthropocene Museum investigates the human impact on the planet. Its first chapter, “Of Steam and Struggle,” examines the impact of geothermal energy production near Nairobi, which displaces the Maasai people and disrupts local ecosystems. By blending scholarship, spiritual beliefs, and technology, cave\bureau underscores in their practice the enduring effects of colonization and resource extraction in East Africa.
