Nineteen gelatin silver prints, printed 2024

Chhachhi’s photographic series Seven Lives and a Dream is presented alongside ephemera from the women’s movement in New Delhi during the early 1980s. The posters in this vitrine were created by Lifetools, a socially engaged design practice established by Chhachhi and Jogi Panghaal. The titles of these posters reveal the movement’s calls to action against patriarchal social structures, which are intensified in India by restrictive religious and caste practices. Similar ideas are expressed in the protest songs and poetry collectively written (in Hindustani), sung, and recited on the movement’s frontlines.
