During the 1980s, Chhachhi participated as an activist and photographer in the women’s movement in New Delhi, where she developed lasting relationships with her comrades. Across this series she records their names, faces, surroundings, and actions in two distinct contexts. Her subjects appear on the frontlines of the movement protesting both the dowry system in India and its related cases of domestic violence and death. Later, Chhachhi also photographs them in carefully posed settings, surrounded with objects and personal effects of their choosing. Each grouping on view here offers a composite portrait of one woman, demonstrating Chhachhi’s complex approach to representation—a collaborative process that expresses the depth and multiplicity of her subjects.
