Dynamic fractals, bold messages, and arresting combinations of color characterize Jeffrey Gibson’s screenprints. As with artist’s work in other media, he incorporates such graphic elements as song lyrics or political slogans that lend cultural specificity and an expansive range to his art. In 2019, Gibson created a series of five editions with the Lower East Side Printshop, using a typeface he designed and collaged paper cutouts. The titles of these prints, “I AM RAINBOW TOO” and “THE FUTURE IS PRESENT,” invite us to identify with these ideas while remaining open-ended expressions of critique, joy, and solidarity.
