Beatriz González Plumario Colombiano [wallpaper] 1983

  • Not on view

González uses domestic objects (such as wallpaper) and images from mass media to critique the class politics and social values of her native Colombia. Here she repeats newspaper images of three Colombian presidents—Belisario Betancur, Julio César Turbay Ayala, and Carlos Lleras Restrepo—wearing Indigenous feather crowns during political ceremonies. To critique the presidents’ condescending act of appropriation, González mixes their images on the same plane as an advertisement for an “Indio Amazónico” (Amazon Indian) offering shamanic services from a storefront in Bogotá. A headline sarcastically declares, “this government has no owners,” pointing to the incomplete promises of democracy.
