Carolyn Lazard In Sickness and Study 2015-ongoing

  • Not on view

In Sickness and Study comes out of the artist’s desire to make visible their experiences inside hospitals—images that are not often represented in visual culture. Each selfie in this ongoing series, which Lazard posts to Instagram, depicts the artist’s arm holding up a book while undergoing intravenous iron infusions. The texts cover subjects ranging from feminist theory to social upheaval to science fiction. In the context of a hospital room, the titles take on varying connotations —poignant, ironic, empowering. Presented here as a set of photographs, this project refutes the notion of the passive patient, positioning information as a form of agency.
