Since the late 1960s, Lake has continually performed for the camera. “I wanted to take control of my representation,” she explained. In Are You Talking to Me #6, five photographs show Lake delivering expressive dialogue—presumably, given the title, Robert De Niro’s iconic line in the film Taxi Driver (1976), which he directs, gun raised, to his own reflection in the mirror. Aiming to recapture the intensity she experienced when watching the film, Lake heated and stretched the negatives to manipulate the resulting images. She also applied color to the black-and-white prints, using pink, for instance, to draw attention to her mouth.
