While in Bermuda with her friend and fellow artist Marjorie Content, O’Keeffe observed the gradual opening of a banana flower, whose unique structure can be seen in the photographs Content took of the same subject. “Each petal had a row of little white flowers under it,” O’Keeffe recalled. “As the petal turns back and dies the little white flowers become bananas.” She recorded this natural progression in a series of charcoal drawings, including the three seen here.
