In 1999 Wodiczko made a site-specific intervention into the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, constructed in remembrance of the 1945 atomic bombing. To create Hiroshima Projection, the artist recorded conversations with survivors and their descendants. He later projected their hand gestures and accompanying testimonies onto the riverbank below the Atomic Bomb Dome, the only structure left standing in the area after the blast. Wodiczko used the sketches shown here to plan the projection. The pages include technical notes and time stamps for video editing, as well as personal reflections by the artist (in English and Polish), prompted by the memories of survivors and their families.
