Many innovations in cinematic and photographic technology were driven by a desire to capture the appearance of the world with ever more realistic effects. Estanave was one of many who sought to achieve the illusion of three-dimensional depth of the stereograph without the necessity of an intermediary device. In 1906, he filed a patent for an autostereoscopic photograph using radiology. Such a system, it was hoped, would enable one to not only look inside the body or other objects, but to perceive their relative position in depth, enabling foreign objects to more accurately be located within an envelope of opaque matter.
