“I think of the body almost as an object,” DeSana has said. “I attempted to use the body but without the eroticism that some photographers use frequently.” Living in New York’s East Village in the 1970s and 80s, DeSana photographed himself and others, often nude but accompanied by a selection of props. Seen from behind, the figure in Marker Cones is clad only in the orange cones that encase its hands and feet, invoking both construction-site gear and stiletto heels.
