This model captures the geometry of Utzon’s daring conception for the multiple performance venues of the Sydney Opera House complex. The various shells represent sections from a spherean aesthetic solution that was also economically viable in terms of construction. The model was the outcome of six years’ collaboration with the firm Ove N. Arup Consulting Engineers and involved an early use of computers in the related structural and acoustic analysis. It took a further twelve years to construct the soaring, sweeping, eye-popping complex overlooking Sydney Harbor, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
