Watercolor and charcoal on paper

Not on view

Bearden and his wife, Nanette Rohan, built a house on the island of Saint Martin, her family’s ancestral home, in 1973. They began to spend more time there during the later years of his life. The bright Caribbean light, natural landscape, and more relaxed pace of life all profoundly affected Bearden’s work. He often worked in watercolor, as in this work, which displays the fluidity of color this medium makes possible. It is inscribed “Dominican Lady” on the back, linking it to Bearden’s career-long practice of creating images of Black women.
