At Geopark, a play area in Stavanger, Norway’s oil capital, redundant materials from the petroleum industry are transformed into a vibrant public space. The park’s design was inspired by the underwater topography of the Troll natural gas and oil field in the North Sea. Bright orange buoys, salvaged pipelines, and recycled drilling platforms—once instruments of resource extraction—now create bike ramps and interactive play spaces, bordered by a graffiti wall. While developing the park, the architects conducted workshops with community groups, reflecting the belief that sustainable practices depend not only on materials and construction methods but also on a supportive network of industry representatives and local citizens.
