Among the devices Bourgeois employed in the pursuit of abstraction was the repetition of certain forms, including straight and curved lines and the small circles seen here. She found such repetitive markings gave her a sense of calm. The extended height of this work also filled an emotional need. "Verticality is the move from the passive (fear and violence) to the active," she said.
