Anxiety, fear, jealousy, and anger can affect the body, and Bourgeois expressed these tensions through imagery of bones, muscles, intestines, and bodily fluids. "With emotions there is always the physical reactionthe heartbeat, breathing, perspiration," she said, but also "paralyzing fears" and "somatic ailments."

In 2018–19, MoMA collaborated with Google Arts & Culture Lab on a project using machine learning to identify artworks in installation photos. That project has concluded, and works are now being identified by MoMA staff.
