La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela Composition 1960 #13. Performance 10 20 62 1962

Zazeela’s Performance 10 20 62 of La Monte Young’s Composition 1960 #13 is also a graphic realization of composer Dennis Johnson’s piece LISTEN, which he conceived as a response to a discussion with Young about the amount of choice that a composer keeps in a piece that uses chance or indeterminacy. Johnson later felt that he had discovered a piece that was entirely indeterminate and didn’t require a composer—it was LISTEN.
