Ruppersberg was among the first generation of Conceptual artists in the United States. Giving precedence to ideas over aesthetic appearance, Conceptual artists work to reveal and explore the mechanisms of the art world, questioning the foundation, meaning, and public reception of art. However, viewers emerge from an experience of Ruppersberg's work with a story instead of simply an idea. In Here and Now/Seeing and Believing the figure of the artist engages the viewer with his gaze, inviting visual inspection and the discovery that the suburban tract houses in the photographs do not match the living rooms, kitchens, and bedrooms also pictured. The photographs are meant to be "seen" and processed through expected cultural narratives and "believed" as a part of the artist's creative fiction.
