Patti Smith

In the early 1970s Smith, a painter-turned-poet, began to set her poems to the electric guitar backup of rock writer Lenny Kaye. Their debut recording “Hey Joe/Piss Factory”—considered to be the first punk-rock record—was financed in part by the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
