Sander’s People of the Twentieth Century—which comprises more than six hundred photographs in nearly fifty portfolios—is an epic, unfinished examination of German society. Sander captured mothers and their children, enduring symbols of social stability in an era when women’s opportunities were rapidly expanding. He emphasized class distinctions through settings, clothing, and other details.
