Biographical Note

Grace M. Mayer, self-described "Writer, Collector and Curator" was born in New York City on November 26, 1901. She established herself as a pioneering Curator of Prints at the Museum of the City of New York and later as a Curator of Photography (1964-1968) and Curator of the Edward Steichen Archive (1968-1996) at The Museum of Modern Art. She was privately educated at the Ethical Culture School and the Seabury Schools, both in New York City, and attended one semester at Columbia University. As a teenager she spent two years in Europe where she was privately tutored and during World War I, she worked as a Nurse's Aide at Roosevelt and Holleran Hospital.

In 1930, Mayer joined the staff of The Museum of the City of New York as a volunteer and was named Curator of Prints in 1934. Although she did not have a formal education in this field, she took a fevered interest in expanding her knowledge of prints and photographs and was an early member of the Print Council of America. Over the next twenty-seven years, she organized more than one hundred exhibitions at the Museum and helped with the formation of one of the world's most comprehensive collections of prints and photographs depicting views of New York City. During this time she also established a close relationship with many of the contemporary photographers whose work she included in exhibitions such as Todd Webb, Erich Hartmann, Shirley C. Burden and Bernice Abbott. In 1958, Once Upon a City was published by MacMillian. The book contained a selection of photographs by the Byron Company depicting scenes of New York, with text by Mayer and a foreword by Edward Steichen, and was accompanied by an exhibition of the same name at the Museum. As Mayer described the story to Paul Cummings in an Oral History conducted with him in 1970 for the Archives of American Art, she sent Steichen a thank you letter for his contribution to the book and asked him what she could do to repay him. He immediately replied, requesting her help with the 1957 Museum of Modern Art exhibition, Seventy Photographers Look At New York [MoMA Exh. # 624, November 26, 1957-March, 1958].

In order to assist Steichen with the exhibition, Mayer took a leave of absence from The Museum of the City of New York; then in July of 1959, she joined The Museum of Modern Art staff as a Personal Assistant to Edward Steichen. In this position she worked on The Sense of Abstraction [MoMA Exh. # 659, February 17-April 10, 1960], Steichen The Photographer [MoMA Exh. # 682, March 29-May 21, 1961], and The Bitter Years [MoMA Exh. # 711, October 18-November 25, 1962].

Edward Steichen retired as Director of Photography in 1961, and John Szarkowski was appointed Director in 1962. Mayer was named Curator of Photography that same year, and in 1964, she organized the inaugural installation of the Museum's photography collection galleries. In 1968, Mayer retired as Curator of Photography and began working as a volunteer under the title Curator of the Edward Steichen Archive. During Mayer's tenure at the Museum her relationships with photographers continued to grow, and thus, her personal collection of photographs continued to expand. This is reflected by the inscription dates on the photographs, with the majority of dates spanning from the early 1960s through the 1980s.

Mayer's work on the Edward Steichen Archive included maintaining, collecting, and researching original and secondary material about Steichen. The collection consists of correspondence, articles by and about him, interviews, films, lectures, television scripts, photographs, and other significant material pertaining to his life and career. She made the Steichen Archive available to many researchers while continuing to work as an assistant to Steichen. Even though Steichen spent most of his time at his home Umpawaug in Redding, Connecticut, Mayer, was in close contact with him in reference to permissions to copy, loan or sell his photographs, and other matters involving Steichen materials at The Museum of Modern Art. In 1972, through Paul Cummings' suggestions, Praeger Publishers approached Mayer with the possibility of publishing a volume devoted to Steichen in the series, Documentary Monographs in Modern Art. The volume was never published but the initial work became Mayer's unpublished biography "Steichen's Way".

Mayer's contributions to the field of photography have been recognized by numerous biographical dictionaries as well as curatorial awards and honors including the In Service to Photography Award of the Maine Photographic Workshops (1987), the Infinity Award for Curatorial Achievement from the International Center of Photography, New York (1990), and in 1995 the Museum of the City of New York honored her with the exhibition, Curating New York: The Legacy of Grace M. Mayer. In 1993, The Museum of Modern Art named Grace M. Mayer Curator Emeritus of Photography.

Grace M. Mayer passed away on December 21, 1996, shortly, after her 95th birthday at her home in the Carlyle Hotel, New York City.

Scope and Content Note

The collected papers and photography collection of Grace M. Mayer gather together a lifetime of both professional and personal work. These provide a broad overview of her curatorial activities for the Department of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art including her unpublished research and writing on the life of Edward Steichen and a rich study collection of photographs by many diverse international photographers. Her career is especially distinguished by her work in maintaining the Edward Steichen Archive at The Museum of Modern Art and her command of details pertaining to Steichen's life which is evident throughout her papers. The Papers are arranged to give special emphasis to Mayer's work as Curator of the Edward Steichen Archive and are organized into nine series and two addenda: Series I: Steichen Correspondence; Series II: Steichen's Death; Series III: Steichen's Way; Series IV: Museum Work; Series V: Personal; Series VI: Printed Material; Series VII: Photographs; Series VIII: Artwork; Series IX: Oversized Material; Addendum A. Miles Barth Gift, Addendum B. Office Books and Periodicals and Addendum C. Collection Prints. Series III: Steichen Correspondence, as well as folder V.10 in Series V. Personal, is currently closed to researchers. Addendum C. Collection Prints provides a cataloged record of Mayer's collection of over 1,000 photographs housed in the Department of Photography, separately from the papers. It is a unique collection in that the majority of works are inscribed by the photographers, many of whom were close friends.

The bulk of the Papers focus on details of Edward Steichen's life. It was through her position as Curator of the Edward Steichen Archive that Mayer came in touch with people who assisted her in attaining facts about his life. These people often became friends of Mayer, and included Steichen family members such as his daughters Kate Rodina Steichen and Mary Steichen-Calderone; associates of Steichen's such as his two technical assistants Rolf P. Petersen and Noel H. Deeks; his friend and fellow photographer, Wayne Miller; and other colleagues in the field of photography including: Davis Pratt, Curator of Photographs at Beinecke Rare Book Library, Yale University; photographer Gisèle Freund; fellow researchers Ronald Gedrim and Maynard P. White Jr. (also the grandson of the photographer Clarence H. White); and photography enthusiast and author, Inge Bondi. Many of these letters contain historical accounts of Steichen's life. The writings of Rolf P. Petersen and Noel H. Deeks record various darkroom techniques, discussing technical matters in printing and chemical formulas, as well as opinions on Steichen and his career as a photographer. The letters from his daughters provide quick date references and personal reminiscences of their father. Frankness and intimacy of correspondents is prevalent in both Mayer's professional and personal correspondence.

Mayer's collection of photographs consists predominately of gelatin silver prints received as gifts from the photographers. Largely collected here are the work of John Albok, Sonja Bullaty and Angelo Lomeo, Norbert Buchsbaum, Lucien Clergue, Bruce Davidson, Yasuhiro Ishimoto, Lotte Jacobi, Lennart Olson, Edward Steichen, Josef Sudek, and Jerry Uelsmann. Many of the prints were personally inscribed to Mayer by the photographers. Her correspondence with photographers mainly comprises short greetings and newsy accounts of their travels, exhibitions and personal matters. Included along with the correspondence and photographs in the collection is a bibliography of Edward Steichen's published work and a chronology of his life, documented on index cards; manuscripts; clippings; notes; printed material (including auction sale catalogs, periodicals, and exhibition announcements) and artwork (including graphite and ink drawings, etchings, and watercolor paintings).

Missing from the Grace M. Mayer Papers are items related to her early curatorial involvement at MoMA. In the Department of Photography Mayer's notes and correspondence are found in the Departmental Files and the Bio-Files (a collection of artists' biographical information, including exhibition announcements, clippings, correspondence and press releases).

Series I: Steichen Correspondence 1955-1989

Steichen Correspondence, 9/2/1955-7/4/1989, is placed at the beginning of the Papers because it encompasses Mayer's work at The Museum of Modern Art as both an assistant to Edward Steichen and Curator of The Edward Steichen Archive. Although Mayer technically served as Personal Assistant to Edward Steichen from 1959 until 1962 (when she was appointed Curator of Photography), this series reflects her continued dedication to assisting Steichen in his activities throughout The Museum of Modern Art. The content of the folders follows an alphabetical arrangement and chronologically therein.

The material in Series I is two-fold, consisting of materials documenting her daily routine as an assistant to Steichen (including invitations for Steichen to participate in an exhibition, copyright permissions to reproduce Steichen's work, and sale of his photographs), and secondly, Mayer's research correspondence regarding the acquisition of both factual information and material objects for the Edward Steichen Archive, as well as correspondence regarding outside research requests. As with all living photographers, permission to use the photographs had to be granted by Steichen and for this reason there are often short notes directed to Edward or Joanna Steichen, or to Chris Brown; (who worked at the Steichen's home as a secretary and aide from February 1964 through August 1972). Inter-filed with the outside request materials is correspondence relating to Mayer's research on acquiring factual information and Steichen memorabilia for the Steichen Archive. This correspondence, with a variety of authorities on Steichen, institutions, family members, and personal as well as professional acquaintances, illustrates how material for the Archive was obtained and added to the collection.

In processing this series it was decided to highlight letters that mention Steichen's participation in an exhibition or the sale of his work, or those which led to the acquisition of material or facts for the Steichen Archive. Included, and also highlighted, is correspondence from members of the Steichen Family, mainly Mary Steichen-Calderone, Kate Rodina Steichen and Joanna Steichen; close associates of Mayer or Steichen, including Noel H. Deeks, L. Fritz Gruber, Caroline Hammarskiöld, Tom Maloney, Wayne Miller, Beaumont Newhall, Davis Pratt and Maynard Pressley White, Jr.; and photographers represented in the Mayer collection, Jaime-Ardilla-Galvis, Rosellina Burri (René Burri), Jed R. Fielding, Hans Hammarskiöld, Allan Ludwig, and Robert Otero.

It must also be noted that Mayer filed correspondence and materials she received directly into the Edward Steichen Archive, without duplicating or making reference to it in the GMM Papers, Series I. Steichen Correspondence. Considering this, the Steichen Archive boxes should be consulted as an alternate source for information.

Series II: Steichen's Death

Subseries II.A: Obituaries 1973-1974

Obituaries and Articles, 3/26/1973-1/1974, is primarily newsprint clippings relating to the death of Edward Steichen. The obituaries are from nearly all of the fifty states in the United States plus a number of countries. In Subseries A, it was decided to retain the original clippings and full page newsprint items. Each newsprint clipping and full page newspaper was photocopied on preservation bond paper and the originals were transferred to Series IX.A. Oversized and Fragile Material where smaller clippings are housed in a document box and full page papers and oversized clippings are housed in newspaper storage boxes. The clippings are arranged in alphabetical order by state followed by international ones. Due to the fragility of the original newsprint clippings in GMM Papers IX.A, special permission to view the material must be granted by the Museum Archivist.

Series III: Steichen's Way

Series III is currently closed to researchers. For further information, please consult the Museum Archivist.

Series III provides documentation of the work involved in writing "Steichen's Way". It is divided into five subseries.

Subseries A. Manuscripts, (1988-1995), consists of four versions of Mayer's manuscript "Steichen's Way," illustrations to accompany the text and reproduction photographs of the illustrations to be used for the book.

Subseries B. Material for Book, (1972-1988), generally includes notes and drafts of a more preliminary nature than those in Series III.A. However, pieces are identical to those collected in Mayer's final manuscript, such as Noel H. Deeks' account of his employment with ES, "My Years With Steichen"; Rolf P. Petersen's contribution "Let the Lights Sing," relating to his years working as an assistant and printer for Steichen's retrospective exhibition and subsequent publication, A Life in Photography; and Steichen's own writing, "Photographing Rodin's Balzac." There is also considerable correspondence accompanying the drafts. Deeks' transcribed diaries, from 1935 to 1942 are included. They provide a rich insight into the daily lab assignments and color experiments that he was working on under Steichen's direction. Similarly, Petersen's correspondence includes details regarding technical issues of printing photographs and opinions of Steichen. Correspondence from Petersen may also be found in Series V. Personal, Subseries A. Correspondence.

The subseries also includes copies of articles, correspondence with associates of ES, and copies of correspondence from the Alfred Steiglitz/Georgia O'Keeffe Papers (YCAL MSS 85) at Yale University. The date span of the series does not reflect these research materials. Series III.B has some overlap with Series I, because Mayer culled and copied select materials from Series I and added them here.

Subseries C. General Correspondence, (11/22/1960-12/29/1992), primarily consists of correspondence between Mayer and various publishers; the bulk of this material relates to her chosen publisher, Harper & Row. Also included is correspondence with Steichen authorities and associates regarding specific facts and dates for Steichen. File Unit III.C.9 reflects the opinions of photographers on Steichen. The list of photographers was selected by Mayer for their participation in Photographs From the Museum Collection [MoMA Exh. # 636, Nov. 26, 1958-Jan. 18, 1959].

Subseries D. Copyright, (5/15/1975-1/16/1990), focuses specifically on copyright issues regarding the publication of "Steichen's Way." The bulk of the material relates permissions to use quoted material or reproduce Steichen's photographs. Signed forms and frequently copies of the requested photograph or quotations are included in the folder along with an occasional letter of reply. The arrangement of the series is alphabetical by name of person or institution.

Subseries E. Card Files, is a collection of index cards documenting Mayer's research. One box contains cards divided into three categories: Owners of Illustrations; List of Plates; and Captions from "Steichen's Way". The second box contains biographical information arranged chronologically, (1879-1978). These cards may have initially been compiled by Mayer for the biographical outline she did for the publication, Steichen The Photographer, and for the version which appeared in A Life in Photography. The cards serve as an excellent reference tool in documenting Steichen's life. They include references to GMM Papers VI.A. Awards, Honors and Exhibitions, as well as to material housed in the Steichen Archive, with special note of the Steiglitz correspondence copied for the Archive. The cards include exhibition information, information about sales of photographs (see also GMM Papers I for correspondence concerning Mayer's research on sales), and travel itineraries.

Series IV: Museum Work

Museum Work mainly documents Mayer's work as the Curator of the Edward Steichen Archive, and secondarily her work as a Curator in the Department of Photography and as an Assistant to Edward Steichen. The series has been sub-divided into three subseries, Card Files, Book Projects, and General Files.

Subseries IV.A: Card Files

Card Files includes a bibliography of works on or by Steichen arranged chronologically; a list of photographs reproduced primarily in Vogue and Vanity Fair arranged alphabetically; and a compendium of Steichen's awards, honors, and exhibitions arranged chronologically.

Subseries IV.B: Book Projects 1962-1982

Book Projects(4/24/1962-1982) documents the various publications Mayer worked on while at MoMA. The documents in this series reveal that she was essentially acting as Steichen's assistant for these publications, handling negotiations between publishers and Steichen, and keeping records of his photographs housed at MoMA. The materials in this series relate to Series I. Steichen Correspondence and Series III, Steichen's Way in that one will find filed in Series I reference to various book projects; while folders IV.B.10 & 11 contain the initial work to a publication documenting the life of Steichen, later to become, Steichen's Way.

Addendum C: Collection Prints

Collection Prints, consists of Mayer's collection of photographs, arranged alphabetically by artist name and stored in museum cases in the Department of Photography. Mayer's photography collection was begun during her tenure as Curator of Prints at The Museum of the City of New York. In her collection development for prints and photographs at the Museum, Mayer became aware of photographers such as Berenice Abbott, Shirley C. Burden, Erich Hartmann and Todd Webb. This collection is distinctive in that the bulk of prints were given to Mayer by the photographers. The inscription dates on the photographs reveal that the majority of photographs were obtained by Mayer between the 1960's and her death in 1996.
