Francis Valentine Dudensing opened the F. Valentine Dudensing Gallery, later renamed Valentine Gallery, in February 1926. One of the first New York galleries to exhibit and sell European modernist paintings, the gallery was highly esteemed by critics, such as Henry McBride. Together with the initial help of Pierre Matisse as an agent in Paris, Dudensing introduced the New York art world to Giorgio de Chirico, Joan Miró, Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, and more through their first solo exhibitions in America at the gallery. He also mounted retrospectives for Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and others. The American tour of Picasso's Guernica (1937), traveling to raise money for Spanish refugees, began at Valentine Gallery in 1939. Dudensing worked with many prominent private collectors and public institutions, including Lillie P. Bliss, James Thrall Soby, and The Museum of Modern Art. The gallery ceased operations in 1947, when Dudensing and his wife, Bibi, retired to the French countryside.
This collection contains four ledger books and four facsimiles of said ledger books. They record the sales and purchases made by Valentine Gallery, founded and directed by Francis Valentine Dudensing, from 1926 to 1944, which roughly corresponds to the gallery's active years from 1926 to 1947.
The records are open for research and contain no restricted materials. However, researchers will be served facsimiles; original ledger books have been retired.
