Raffaella De Simone and Valentina Mandalari’s proposal features the varied spatial qualities of simple wooden constructions: shaded cabana-style rooms that provide space for relaxation and a view of the activities in the surrounding open space. Canopied with different textiles, the structures offer a variety of microclimates; in their minimalism they contrast with the great museum building and the open space of its piazza. The wooden elements are discrete and may be moved around the square, which is partially flooded to create a cooling and interactive environment.

MAXXI, the National Museum of XXI Century Arts, is the first Italian national institution devoted to contemporary creativity and conceived as a broad cultural campus. MAXXI is managed by a Foundation constituted in July of 2009 by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and houses two museums: MAXXI Art and MAXXI Architecture.
