Richard Hell and The Voidoids
Part of the first wave of American noise bands, Sonic Youth carried out its interpretation of hardcore punk in the evolving American underground music scene, which focused more on the do-it-yourself ethic of the genre rather than any specific sound. As a result, the band was pivotal in the rise of the alternative rock movement. Glenn Branca signed Sonic Youth as the first act on his label Neutral Records.
