Beth B

The short-lived group Dominatrix, created by Stuart Arbright, combined a Euro-dance beat with an edgy punk/new wave/technopop perspective. Artist Beth B defined the song with a “transgressive” video shot in the Bronx. Derived from a Zulu folk song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” sung by Miriam Makeba and then the folk singers the Weavers, the song’s updated version replaces the snoozing lion with a rapacious woman slinking through the urban jungle.
