One of the most important contemporary artists working in Europe, Annette Messager fragments images and language to explore the concept of fiction, the dialogue between individual and collective identity, and the social issues of normalcy, morality, and the role of women. In her work she forcefully illustrates the idea that all things -- a child's beloved toy, a photograph, a piece of embroidery, a word with seemingly unambiguous meaning -- can be transformed into objects of potent expression.
Annette Messager was organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. The exhibition and its accompanying publication are supported in part by generous grants from the AFAA (Association Française d'Action Artistique--Ministère des Affaires Etrangères) and the National Endowment for the Arts. Transportation was provided in part by Air France. Additional funding for the New York showing was provided in part by the Contemporary Exhibition Fund of The Museum of Modern Art, established with gifts from Lily Auchincloss, Agnes Gund and Daniel Shapiro, and Mr. and Mrs. Ronald S. The exhibition premiered at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and was on view at The Museum of Modern Art , New York, from October 12, 1995, to January 16, 1996, and at the Art Institute of Chicago from February17 to May 19, 1996.
