As today is Veterans Day, I’d like to share a little history about MoMA’s commitment to veterans, as well as some news about what we’re doing now. The Museum has a long history of serving veterans—dating back to the creation of the War Veterans’ Art Center
My first painting in 20 years
Even though fall is upon us and the new school year is fully underway, I find myself reflecting on summer, specifically a new teacher program we launched. One of the highlights of my summer, MoMA at the Beach, brought together 15 art-studio teachers from the Tri-State area and three instructors to The Art Barge in Amagansett for a workshop focusing on painting, techniques, materials, and process.

In the spirit of the exhibition Talk to Me: Design and the Communication between People and Objects</a>, we have invited a remarkable group of designers, thinkers, and writers to talk to us on the evening of October 18 and all day on October 19 at The Museum of Modern Art.
Clifford Owens. Anthology (Saya Woolfalk score). performance still
Clifford Owens needed help. Since May he has been in residence at MoMA PS1 where has been preparing for his fall exhibition Anthology. Owens has been interpreting and carrying out performance scores written by African-American artists. While most scores are written instructions for actions, Saya Woolfalk’s contribution is a graphical score that resembles a drawing complete with costumed characters and stick figures interacting with one another.

One of the best and most influential street skaters of all time, and one of the first professional skaters to make the transition to professional artist, Mark Gonzales has long been respected as a singular talent across multiple fields. The teens in this summer’s Shred, Thrash, Carve: The Visual Language of Skateboard Culture were given the chance to meet, work, and skate with him last week when he dropped into our Education and Research Building with his amazing Circle Board.
A few months ago, artist Laurel Nakadate sat down with teens from our Museum Studies program and had a campfire cookout on the floor of her exhibition Laurel Nakadate: Only the Lonely at MoMA PS1.
We invite you to join us tomorrow, Saturday, June 18, at MoMA PS1 for Open Studios, where you can meet the five interdisciplinary teams working on solutions to the foreclosure crisis in the U.S., hear about their projects, and see work in progress.
Foreclosed: Rehousing the American Dream is a collaboration between The Museum of Modern Art and Columbia University’s Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture. Jointly conceived and curated by Barry Bergdoll, MoMA’s Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design, and Reinhold Martin, Director, the Buell Center, the workshop and exhibition will examine new architectural possibilities for American cities and suburbs in the context of the recent foreclosure crisis.
Each of the five interdisciplinary teams is focusing on a specific “megaregion,” and are producing work during a workshop phase at MoMA PS1 to be included in the exhibition at MoMA opening in January 2012. The workshops are open to the public in an effort to highlight the process of architecture.
For those of you unable to attend in person, we will attempt to provide live video of the presentations to the public on our Facebook page and on our Livestream page. Video of the presentations will also be available next week for the public to review.

I had the opportunity to meet with a group of teens in MoMA’s Museum Studies program to discuss what the Department of Communications does for the Museum. Besides writing press releases and pitching stories to the media, among many other things, we think creatively to get the word out about MoMA and MoMA PS1 exhibitions.

For the past few months, Rebecca Goyette, one of three educators running the Museum’s Community Partnership Programs, has been working with the photographers at Project Luz to combine their own practice as artists with images and themes from MoMA’s collection.
