The artist, architect, and writer Marcel Iancu cofounded Contimporanul: Organ of Romanian Constructivism with Ion Vinea, following Iancu’s stay in Zurich and engagement in Dada activities with fellow Romanian Tristan Tzara. The magazine was named after a journal from the 1880s that promoted a socialist ideology among intellectual circles in Romania. Under Vinea’s editorial direction, the new Contimporanul took up a similar political agenda and included content about political events in Romania. By 1923, Contimporanul had changed its format and began to feature work by the international avant-garde, including cover art by the Hungarian Lajos Kassák. The circle around Contimporanul also regularly organized exhibitions of new art in Bucharest that were publicized through the magazine.
