White and his first wife, Elizabeth Catlett, met in the summer of 1941, when she moved to Chicago to study ceramics at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and lithography at the South Side Community Art Center. Margaret Burroughs, Catlett’s roommate for the summer, introduced the two young artists. They married shortly thereafter and moved to New York City together. The couple taught art classes at the George Washington Carver School in Harlem, established in 1943 for the underserved community, and were directors of the art program at Wo-Chi-Ca. In this photograph, White captures Catlett—a formidable artist in a range of mediums—in front of a canvas depicting a young girl playing a guitar. Catlett’s interest in the rendering the female figure had a lasting impact on White, who also made celebrative images of women throughout his career.
