One of the bars Rauschenberg frequented was Max’s Kansas City, which club owner Mickey Ruskin opened on Park Avenue South in 1965. Max’s was an exuberant, counter-cultural foil to the Abstract Expressionist Cedar Tavern. At his favorite table at Max’s, Rauschenberg was joined by New York artists such as Andy Warhol and Carl Andre. There Rauschenberg also befriended the singer Janis Joplin, after she passed him a note reading, "We’re the only two people to get out of Port Arthur, Texas." Max’s was so beloved by the art world that in 1973 Rauschenberg and others signed certificate bonds that Ruskin could sell just to keep it from going under during troubled financial times. Max’s folded in 1981.
