From October 13 through 22 of 1966, 9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering took place at the 69th Regiment Armory Building on Lexington Avenue. A group of artists, drawn largely from the Judson Dance Theater circle, worked with more than 30 engineers from Bell Laboratories in New Jersey to create performances that incorporated cutting-edge technological systems, including sound automation, remote control, night vision, and Doppler sonar. Fifty years later, 9 Evenings is recognized as a watershed moment in the history of art and technology; but those who were there remember machines malfunctioning, missed cues, and the audience’s boredom. Just prior to 9 Evenings, Rauschenberg, artist Robert Whitman, and Bell Laboratories engineers Fred Waldhauer and Billy Klüver founded Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.), imagined as a matchmaking service to put artists and engineers together for creative projects.
