Biographical Note

John Margolies (5/16/1940), a writer, critic and photographer, was the Assistant Editor of Architectural Record (1964-1968) before becoming associated with the American Federation of Arts (NY) as Coordinator of Experimental Programs.

In 1970 Margolies moved to Los Angeles, became a consultant to AFA, and served as guest editor of Design Quarterly, issue no. 78/79.


Scope and Content Note

Ephemera and correspondence collected by John Margolies between 1968 and 1974 relating to the activities of the following groups/artists: New York Corres Sponge Dance School of Vancouver, Image Bank (Vancouver, B.C.) (and 1971 Postcard Show), Ace Space, Fat City School of Finds Arts, Decca Dance (Feb. 1974), Haus-Rucker-Co., Ray Johnson, Ant Farm (large number of letters, postcards, circulars, articles, 1970-1973), Electronyx and Onyx.

These documents were acquired by The Museum of Modern art Library in 1978 along with a great many books, exhibition catalogs and magazines. Some of the emphemeral material was organized into the John Margolies notebook, other material was incorporated into the Museum Library's artist and subject files (see attached accounting).
