Overview of the Collection

Creator: General Idea (Firm)
Title: General Idea Ephemera
Inclusive Dates: 1972-2007
Quantity: .5 Linear Feet
1 manuscript box
Abstract: Ephemera collection of Canadian artist group, General Idea. This collection includes invitations to exhibitions and performances, many designed by General Idea, along with mailers, flyers, and subway posters.

Arrangement

The Collection has been arranged in one series. The ephemera has been grouped together by year and has been further arranged in chronological order.

Historical Note

General Idea was an art collective active from 1967 to 1994. It was founded by Canadian artists AA Bronson, Felix Partz, and Jorge Zontal. The collective's work focused on conceptual media-based art and was heavily influenced by popular culture. Their works challenged the distinction between art and popular culture, often including participatory works such as The 1970 Miss General Idea Pageant. General Idea also founded the Canadian not-for-profit institution, Art Metropole.

Scope and Contents

The General Idea Ephemera Collection consists of exhibition and performance related ephemera. These items include invitations, flyers, and mailers. An almost complete set of exhibition cards, including many designed by General Idea, can be found in this collection. Additional ephemera such as subway posters and announcements are also represented.
