The winning project, He, opening at MAXXI in Rome, Italy, this summer, is a large-scale balloon floating above the MAXXI piazza, providing shadow to a lawn and wooden platform below equipped with areas for play and rest. Human interaction takes place amid the dripping water flowing along the base of the suspended balloon, a chilling curtain that virtually defines the area underneath. When night falls, water is replaced by artificial light, turning the balloon into a suspended lantern. After the installation, helium will be recovered from the deflated balloon and reused for scientific and medical research.

MAXXI, the National Museum of XXI Century Arts, is the first Italian national institution devoted to contemporary creativity and conceived as a broad cultural campus. MAXXI is managed by a Foundation constituted in July of 2009 by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and houses two museums: MAXXI Art and MAXXI Architecture.
