Carolyn Birdsall

Carolyn Birdsall is Assistant Professor in Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam and is currently a visiting researcher at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin. Her monograph Nazi Soundscapes: Sound, Technology and Urban Space in Germany, 1933–1945 was published by Amsterdam University Press (pdf also available via oapen.org). This study examines the political and cultural significance of sound technologies during Weimar and National Socialist Germany. Her current research focuses on practices of sound recording and archiving in German broadcasting (1930–1960), with a related interest in concepts of "documentary sound" in European radio and sound film.
