This image is from a body of screenprints Mthethwa created while in residence at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town. He selected and cropped several images from previous photographic essays—Interiors (1995–2005), of people inside their homes at townships and informal settlements, and Mother & Child (2000), picturing expectant and new mothers—and created prints from them that exploit the expressive potential of screenprinted color.
