At Shanghai’s Palace of Culture, ten thousand workers come each Sunday to play ping-pong and checkers, and to listen to lectures. Each day during the week, some five thousand people visit this former hotel located near what had been a racetrack. In all, there are nineteen “cultural” clubs for workers, plus organizations belonging to specific factories.
