Nils Gaup
(Sami) Nils Gaup (Sami) was one of the first indigenous filmmakers to direct a feature film. Pathfinder was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1987, one of only three films from Norway ever to be nominated. Gaup has also directed features on non-Sami themes, including North Star (1995) and Misery Harbour (2000). A graduate of the Norwegian Theatre Academy, he began his career as an actor in theatre and film, and was a co-founder of the Beaivvs Sami Theater in 1981, the first Sami theater company in Norway. Gaup's current film projects include an American remake of Pathfinder and a work on the 1852 Sami uprising in Kautokeino, Norway, where Gaup was born. Gaup recently directed Deadline Torp (2005), a NRK TV dramatic mini-series.
