Rineke Dijkstra (Dutch, born 1959)
In this series of portraits, Dijkstra describes our common existential vulnerability by isolating her subjects from the context in which she finds them. The photographs, which include pictures of women who have just given birth, a toddler, and awkward adolescents in bathing suits, are a metaphor for the human condition. Her subjects' solitude, as well as the various levels of psychological and physical vulnerability described by Dijkstra, underscores their defenselessness.
