Inspired by the ostrich egg, the symbol of the virginal birth in Piero della Francesca's painting The Madonna and Child with Federico da Montefeltro (c. 1475), conserved in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, the egg-shaped diffuser is split in two parts held together by a ring nut to assure easy access to the bulb and to provide cooling.
