The work of the French artist Annette Messager refuses categorization at every level. Alternating between quiet, almost religious reverence and wild, often sexual escapade, it conjures a visiting carnival, in which normal life is disrupted and expectations are turned upside down. Over the last twenty-five years she has consistently pushed against artistic boundaries, using an array of materials and methods: cut and painted photographs; wall pieces juxtaposing images, plush toys, and written language; and arrangements of found objects. While it draws on Surrealist ideas, Messager's work is centered in an investigation of social values.
Illustrating many facets of a highly individual oeuvre, this book is published to accompany the first museum presentations of Messager's work in the United States. The authors, who have worked closely with Messager in preparing the exhibition and the book, introduce her work and provide a rich intellectual context for it.
