Introduction to Materials & Process 720

Learning Specialist, Carolina Malagamba:  Hi, my name is Carolina. I’m an educator who takes friends of all ages through MoMA to look at and talk about art. Sometimes we think that we need to know everything about art to be able to engage with it. But what I hope we’ll realize today is that by taking time to look slowly, we can maybe find out some of the secrets that hide in these artworks.

The theme for this audio tour is materials and process. The fourth floor roughly covers 1950s to 1970s. This time period was defined by a lot of social movements and people fighting for social justice and then we had the rise of a lot of new technologies. So there was a lot going on in the world.

Things turned really fun and funky and weird in the best way possible. Artists were experimenting with new materials, or also more traditional materials, but using them in a totally unexpected way.

As we go on this tour together, you’ll be hearing from me, from different people in the museum, and from some of the artists themselves. I think the fourth floor shows us that there is no one way or even a right way of making art. And as we explore these artworks, I also want you to think about how you could break the mold of what art is.
