Wahlkampf (Letzte Wahl)

Ella Bergmann-Michel. Wahlkampf (Letzte Wahl). 1932

Curator, Jodi Hauptman: This is a film by the artist and filmmaker Ella Bergmann-Michel. She wanders through Frankfurt and we see the way the streets of the city are transformed by political posters. This footage was shot right before Hitler became chancellor of Germany.

The period that this exhibition covers between World War I and World War II—was a moment of enormous change and transformation. We're also living in a time of enormous political, social, economic change. We're also living in a time where image-making has exploded in new forms—online platforms and new ways of using those digital tools. So, when we see artists taking to the street or trying to make art that lives on Twitter, those artists are also thinking about: how can they respond to the most urgent political, social, and economic issues of their day.
