Educator, Sarah Dinkelacker: Hi, my name’s Sarah, and I work here at MoMA.
Nova: My name is Nova, and I’m six years old.
Sarah Dinkelacker: We’re gonna start off by looking at this artwork from far away. I’m noticing this big rectangular shape, and it’s all black.
As I walk closer, I’m starting to notice that it’s made up of boxes, with things inside of them. What do you notice?
Nova: That round piece—it looks like a table. A vase. A cup and plate.
Sarah Dinkelacker: What shapes do you see?
Nova: Spiky. Sharp. Round. Bumpy. Curvy. Smooth.
Sarah Dinkelacker: This artwork is made by an artist named Louise Nevelson, and she was really inspired by all the stuff she found in the city. She loved to walk around and collect things that other New Yorkers were throwing away.
You might notice the deeper you go into the artwork, the darker it gets. Louise Nevelson was really interested in this idea of doorways to another world. We have all these boxes stacked up on top of each other, and it’s almost like each one is an entire world inside.
You might think about which one you want to enter and what it would be like in there.
