Matt Mullican: : Hello. I'm Matt Mullican, and this room that you're in is made of bed sheets. And on each bed sheet there are nine easel pad sheets glued. And then on those easel pad sheets I've drawn or written images.

Now, the project itself goes back some years to a performance of mine where I hired a hypnotist. And that hypnotist put me into a trance state, and I did a free-associative kind of performance in front of an audience in a hypnotic trance.

And I said, "Wow, what if we get That Person to be the artist? So the person that I became in a hypnotic trance, this crazy person, this person that I do not, I cannot control, we'll have him be the artist. He can make the work."

One of the elements—and you will see that in these drawings—is that there's a craziness about it. There's an obsession about it because That Person has a relationship to mental illness, you could say, a kind of mental illness. I've given myself permission, through doing this for so long, to kind of go into that part of my brain where these things are existing. And I think they're existing in everybody.
