Gabriel Orozco. Notebooks

Artist, Gabriel Orozco: I don’t have a studio because I will not know what to do in it. I don’t have a specific technique. I am changing all the time, so I don’t have like specific tools I need all the time, so every time changing. I like to be free of that in a way, it’s like, not having a studio is like having an unstable situation, which is what I am looking for. So, I don’t have this bubble or laboratory, in which I am outside of reality. I like to go out into the real, and then, improve or work out my experiences in there.

So, the fact that I don’t have a studio what happens is that of course, to keep my records, my ideas projects and all that, I start to use the notebooks, and they became my studio, in a way. So I have it there, a lot of information that I use regularly. I have technical drawings. Writing of ideas, reproductions of this and that, the collages, they became very much my archive and personal encyclopedia somehow. And, I’m just preparing myself and reading about things I am interested, and writing down things, and then I go out, or prepare a project, and then I sometimes improvise a studio for specific reasons.
